Choosing a toggle switch

SPST, SPDT, DPST or DPDT?

SPST switches one circuit on and off. SPDT switches one circuit between two outputs. DPST and DPDT do the same for two separate circuits at once – handy for switching positive and negative, or two loads together.

On–off, on–off–on or momentary?

On–off stays where you put it. On–off–on has a centre-off position with an output either side – for example forward / off / reverse. Momentary positions spring back when released.

Sealed for wet areas

For boats, wash-down areas and engine bays, choose a sealed or IP-rated switch, or fit a rubber boot to a standard toggle.

Missile covers

A flip-up missile cover stops a switch being knocked on or off by accident – ideal for winches, pumps, kill switches and anything you only want switched on purpose.

Common questions

What do (On) and Momentary mean in a switch name?

A position in brackets, such as (On), is momentary – it only stays on while you hold the lever there.

Can I use a toggle switch for a high-current load?

Check the rating against your load. For fridges, compressors or spotlights, switch a relay and let the relay carry the current.
